Our Mission

The Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma (CSTWT), a non-profit, 501c3 organization committed to facilitating the healing process for refugee and immigrant survivors of torture and and their families by providing culturally appropriate services, advocacy, and community education. The Center serves refugees and immigrants in the St. Louis area who have survived torture, war, and forced relocation and are suffering the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder to the extent that their ability to perform the functions of everyday living and to provide for themselves and their families is impaired. The staff also assists in providing the necessary documentation to the court in asylum cases. CSTWT provides individual and group therapy, aftercare group, casework and referral. It also has a multilevel youth program.
CSTWT belongs to a network of agencies called Care Access to New Americans, whose purpose is to provide a holistic inter-referral system for those who are suffering debilitating effects of PTSD.
Our HistoryThe origins of CSTWT began in the early 1990s when therapists were seeing an increase of refugees who were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. An informal coalition of service providers was formed in order to address the special needs of these new Americans. In the summer of 2001, CSTWT was incorporated as a non-profit 501c3 corporation in Missouri to enable it to initiate projects relative to the needs of the clients with emphasis on providing appropriate mental health services. Our clients come from Afghanistan , Bosnia , Congo , Ethiopia , Iran, Iraq Somalia, Liberia , Vietnam , and other countries that are experiencing unrest.
